ADULT: Wingspan - 18-30mm. The curved forewings are orange-brown with two-pale cross-lines and two obvious black spots. The apex of the wing is hooked. The hindwings are pale orange with three yellow fascia. Male antenna are bipectinate whereas those of the female are simple. LARVA: Brown with yellow markings and a tapered tail. Feeds on Oak but has been recorded on Alder, Birch and Beech. BEHAVIOUR: Adults are attracted to light in small numbers. HABITAT: Oak woodland, fens, grassland and parkland. FLIGHT PERIOD: Double brooded - May to June and on the wing again in August. STATUS: Common in southern Britain. |
